Amsterdam tenders for new low-floor fleet

Amsterdam public transport operator GVB has issued an international tender for 63 bi-directional low-floor trams for operation on the hybrid tram/light rail line to Amstelveen.

Amsterdam public transport operator GVB has issued an international tender for 63 bi-directional low-floor trams (the ‘15G series’), capable of operating on the hybrid tram/light rail line to Amstelveen.

Aimed to replace the oldest trams on the city’s extensive 161km (100-mile) network, the tender also calls for vehicles capable of coping with the short steep gradients common in Amsterdam where tramlines cross canals.

In the past GVB has used the canal bridge at Roeterstraat to test low-floor trams due its steep approach and sharp curve, proving that certain types of vehicle were not suitable for use in Amsterdam. The operator expects to select a preferred bidder by the end of next year, with the aim of introducing the new fleet from 2020.
