On 21 October Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced that CNR Changchun had been awarded a USD566.6m MBTA order for rapid transit cars for the Red and Orange lines in Boston.

CNR Changchun has offered to use a USD60m facility in Springfeld, MA (previously owned by Westinghouse Electric) for assembly, meeting Buy America requirements for 60% local content, and creating 250 new jobs.

The first of the 248 cars will arrive in early 2018: 152 will go to the Orange line and 132 to the Red line. There is an option for a further 58 Red line cars, which would be delivered by 2023.

The project budget is approximately USD1.3bn, including funding to expand and improve MBTA maintenance and storage facilities in Medford and Boston. The car procurement is funded entirely by State Transportation Bond Funds.
