Centro seeks ten-year expansion partner

With the Midland Metro extension to New Street due to open later this year, preparatory works are already underway elsewhere in the city.

West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive Centro (UK) plans to appoint a single contractor and designer to deliver proposed extensions over a ten-year period, following acceptance of the Midland Metro expansion package under the Midlands Growth Strategy being developed by the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership.

As well as the current Birmingham City Centre Extension scheme from Snow Hill to New Street Station (expected to open at the end of the year), funding is now in place for the following extensions: New Street to Centenary Square; Centenary Square to Edgbaston (Five Ways); Wolverhampton Pipers Row to Railway Station; Birmingham Eastside including Curzon Street HS2 station and Bordesley. The overall package could be worth GBP900m (EUR1.3bn). Expressions of interest were expected by 10 August with a contract to start on 1 April next year and run to 31 March 2026.
