The Metropolitan District of Quito and Quito Metro – Quito being the capital of Ecuador – has announced the winning consortia who is to begin construction on its first metro line: Acciona, Spain, and Odebrecht, Brazil were the preferred bidders for the US$1.54bn construction contract.

It is intended that the contract for Phase 2, which encompasses the construction of tunnels and most of the stations (13 out of 15), electrical and mechanical systems, depot and stabling facilities along with the 22.5km (14-mile) line itself will be signed within 60 days.

Phase 1 (construction of El Labrador and La Magdalena stations) was awarded to Acciona in 2012. The contract for supply of 18 six-car trains and four maintenance vehicles was put out to tender last year.

The project totals US$2bn, which is being funded by the Municipality of Quito and the Ecuadorian government.
