Transport Infrastructure Ireland placed a EUR36.5m order for seven nine-section Alstom Citadis trams on November 25.

To be built at Alstom’s La Rochelle factory, the trams will be the largest in the Luas fleet (at 54.6m, capacity for 379 passengers) and are to be delivered in time for the opening of the Cross City extension at the end of 2017. The EUR368m project will extend the route by 5.9km (3.7 miles) from St Stephen’s Green to Cabra, adding 13 stops.

Maintenance will be carried out at both Sandyford and Broombridge depots.

To accommodate the longer trams, platforms at existing Green line stops will be extended.
