East Link project gets USD1.33bn funding boost

Puget Sound Region's East Link LRT extension receives funding to begin construction.

On 16 January US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced a USD1.33bn Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan to Sound Transit towards construction of the (23.3km 14.5-mile) East Link LRT Extension project.

The loan will expand the Link system serving the Puget Sound region, adding ten stations and connecting some of the region’s fastest-growing areas to Sound Transit’s existing system at the International District/Chinatown Station.

In addition to the TIFIA loan, the FTA has committed USD74.7m funding allied to USD14m in TIGER V grants toward the USD4bn East Link Project.

Construction is expected to begin later in 2015, with an opening date of 2023. The new line is expected to serve 50 000 riders/day by 2030.
