Edinburgh bests passenger targets

Around 4.92m passenger journeys were made on Edinburgh Trams (UK) during its first year of operation – some 370 000 ahead of the target set before launch. The tramway has also surpassed revenue targets set out in its business model by around 3%. Concessionary cardholders currently account for 10.9% of passengers, within the City of Edinburgh Council’s budget for free travel.

The line has received a 95% overall customer satisfaction rating following a UK-wide survey by Passenger Focus and currently operates with 99% service reliability. In 2014 the service contributed 3m new passengers to the Transport for Edinburgh group with Lothian Buses also carrying an extra 3m more than in 2013.

Tom Norris, Director and General Manager of Edinburgh Trams has stepped down to take on a senior operations role at ScotRail operator Abellio. Mr Norris led the Edinburgh Trams team through the period immediately before operations commenced and the first full year of operations. Recruitment for the post has begun.
