Edinburgh moves forward with tram expansion

The City of Edinburgh Council (UK) agreed to first phase proposals for the extension of the tramway through Leith to Newhaven at its meeting in December.

The City of Edinburgh Council (UK) agreed to first phase proposals for the extension of the tramway through Leith to Newhaven at its meeting in December. An accelerated GBP3.25m (EUR4.4m) package of works will be put into place over the next 18 months comprising project development and preparation of the Outline Business Case. A further GBP1.75m (EUR2.4m) has been set aside to secure land along line 1b for future development.

It is expected that this funding will come from a call for an extraordinary dividend payment from the council’s Lothian Buses arm’s-length company, which has now been factored into the company’s financial planning.

The first stage, which runs until summer 2017, will involve the establishment of a project team, the development of financing plus stakeholder engagement. It will also bring forward work initially covered in a proposed second phase, including initial work on an invitation to tender and the start of a prequalification process for bidders.
