Bombardier held a special event at its Vienna manufacturing facility on 8 June to mark completion of the 100th M5000 high-floor tram for the Manchester Metrolink network (UK). It arrived in the UK on 15 June. The M5000 trams are being supplied by a consortium of Bombardier and Vossloh Kiepe.

The first M5000 entered service on the Piccadilly – Eccles line in December 2009 and the fleet has grown steadily to support Metrolink expansion and enable replacement of the system’s original AnsaldoBreda T68 trams, the final examples of which were withdrawn last year.

In September 2014 Transport for Greater Manchester placed a further order for 16 M5000 vehicles to cater for extensions to the system that include the Trafford Park line and the Second City Crossing, taking its fleet to 120 by 2017.
