A prototype 1524mm-gauge Metelica tram developed by the joint venture of Stadler and Belkommunmash is to undergo trials in the Russian city of Samara, following four months of successful testing with Moscow operator Mosgortrans.

The 26.7m bidirectional vehicle, with a capacity for 250 passengers, has been developed specifically for the CIS region and has been designed to operate within a temperature range of -40 to +40°C. The prototype has covered more than 10 000 trouble-free kilometers since it first arrived in Moscow in February.

Samara operates a 161km (100-mile) tramway with around 450 vehicles, and is due to host matches during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
