New trams for Tokyo

The first two Series 8900 trams have begun service on the Arakawa Line in Tokyo.

The first two Series 8900 trams have begun service in Tokyo, on the Arakawa Line. These are intended to replace the existing Series 7000 trams, the oldest of which date from 1954. A further six new trams are due for delivery by early 2017.

Alna Sharyo in Osaka manufactured the trams, each of which is a 13m long single-section vehicle equipped with LED lighting, passenger information screens, UV filtered windows, and two wheelchair spaces.

The 12.2km (7.6-mile) Arakawa Line in Tokyo, Japan, currently serves 45 000 passengers per day.
