In a surprise move, on 23 September Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa directed the country’s Ministry of Transport to terminate work on the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded LRT project to link the capital Colombo with Malabe with immediate effect.

In a letter released on social media, Secretary to the President P. B Jayasundara said the LRT project is “very costly and not the appropriate cost-effective solution for the urban Colombo transportation infrastructure.”

The Sri Lankan Government signed a JPY30bn (EUR243m) concessionary loan with JICA
for the project in March 2020.
