Rio de Janeiro’s modern tramway expands

The second line of the VLT Carioca tramway in Rio De Janeiro (Brazil) opened for trial operation on 6 February.

The second line of the VLT Carioca tramway in Rio De Janeiro (Brazil) opened for trial operation on 6 February.

The second phase of the system covers four stops and links Praça XV (Barcas) with Saara. At a later date it will be extended westwards to join the first phase of the network, which opened in June 2016.

It was intended that three lines and 31 stops would be open ahead of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but these plans were not realised.

Line 2 is operated by two Alstom Citadis trams, running 08.00-14.00 every 15 minutes. Revenue service was due to begin on 13 February, but the full opening has been postponed.
