The South Korean capital’s two metro operators are to be merged by 2016, to enhance efficiency and help reduce the combined deficit of KRW4.6trn (USD4.2bn).
Lines 1-4 are currently run by Seoul Metro, while the Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation operates lines 5-8. Line 9, which is run by the SML9 consortium of RATP Dev and Transdev, is unaffected.
The new operator will handle 6.8m passengers/day across a network totalling 300 route km.
