Sevilla City Council has placed an order with CAF for another two Urbos low-floor trams for its 2.2km (1.4-mile) standard-gauge Metrocentro city tramline (Plaza Nueva – San Bernardo).

For delivery from late 2023, the 32m five-section vehicles will come equipped with onboard energy storage for catenary-free operation in the historic city centre. The EUR33m contract includes 30 years of maintenance, and options for a further three vehicles.

Work on a EUR14.9m extension from San Bernardo to Centro Comercial Nervión began in March and is due for completion next year. The key engineering feature of this 1.4km (0.9-mile) extension is a new tunnel under the junction between Calle Ramón y Cajal and Calle San Francisco Javier.

A second phase of the project is planned, taking the line to Santa Justa station.
