Siemens has been commissioned by light rail operator Rheinbahn to upgrade signalling on the 11km (6.8-mile) Stadtbahn tunnel in Dusseldorf. The tunnel was constructed in the 1970s and 80s, and the signaling is now largely obsolete. Siemens will equip its Trainguard ZUB 222 train protection for semi-automated operation, which will monitor the vehicle’s speed during operation, while Controlguide Vicos operations control will be installed and Trackguard Sicas ECC electronic interlocking will replace the relay-based interlocking.

Work will take place in stages to avoid disruption in the four-track tunnel, to complete late 2018.
