Siemens has confirmed an order from Nuremberg transport operator VAG for 12 four-section 36.9m Avenio trams for delivery by the end of 2022. The EUR44m contract includes options for up to 75 additional vehicles. The fleet will be used to enhance services and cater for network expansion.
The 2.4m-wide trams will be 90% recyclable and feature a revised interior design with LED lighting throughout and high-speed passenger Wi-Fi.
VAG has secured more than EUR25m in funding from the State of Bavaria towards its acquisition of new trams and U-Bahn trains. The grants will cover around 40% of the cost of the base tram order and around 25% of the cost of new trains for U-Bahn line U1.
