On 20 July Berlin transport operator BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) announced a EUR60m order for 11 Stadler four-car Type IK narrow-profile U-Bahn trainsets.

The firm order follows the delivery of two prototype IK trainsets – derived from Stadler’s Tango family of light rail vehicles – earlier in the year that have been undergoing testing on the city’s U-Bahn small profile lines U1 to U4 since February.

The Type IK prototypes were first ordered in 2012 and are intended to replace the 1970s A3L71 stock. The tighter profile of lines U1-U4 has previously restricted train widths to 2.3m, but the Type IK features an innovative curved mid-body design that increases internal space by 100mm, giving a total overall width of 2.4m.

Deliveries are due in 2017.
