Testing has begun on the latest phase of Sofia, Bulgaria’s, metro network extensions.
Bulgaria’s Transport Minister, Mr Ivailo Moskowsky, Mayor of Sofia Mrs Jordanka Fandakova, and the Chairman of the City Metropolitan Council Mr Syoyan Bratoev inspected two extensions to Line 1 at the end of February prior to the launch of testing.
Due to open in April of this year with public service following shortly afterwards in May, the 7.2km (4.5-mile) extension will consist of four stations and link Tsarigradsko Shose to Sofia airport Terminal 2.
The second extension to Line 2 will link James Bourchier to Srebarna, and will open in June 2016. The two extensions will bring the network’s length up to 40km (25 miles) with 35 stations.
A Line 3 extension of 7km (4.3 miles) is also due to begin construction this year, with a tender for new trains due to be launched soon.
