The first test tram ran between St Peter’s Square and Exchange Square on Manchester Metrolink’s Second City Crossing (2CC) in the early hours of 1 December.
The new UK line connects the expanded St Peter’s Square stop that opened in December 2015 with Exchange Square and Victoria station. It runs via Princess Street and Cross Street and will allow more frequent services through the city centre and give greater operational flexibility to the system.
The benefits of the Second City Crossing began when the first phase opened from Victoria to the newly-expanded stop at Exchange Square in December 2015. Fast-tracked thanks to the European Regional Development Fund, the new line means a six-minute daytime service runs between Shaw and Crompton, Oldham and the city centre from Monday to Saturday.
