“Public transport is critical to the way we work and live and drive global competitiveness”. This was the message delivered by UK Transport Minister Baroness Kramer at the latest ‘high level tram summit’, convened by the Department for Transport and UKTram, on 4 February.
The event brought together 50 key stakeholders from the public and private sector to assess light rail progress in the UK and hear reports from the working parties set up by a reinvigorated UKTram.
“Light rail has shown it is successful in supporting urban renewal… and we need to further recognise the value of innovation,” Baroness Kramer continued, emphasising how the industry needs a ‘clear single voice’.
As the UK moves closer to a General Election on 7 May, questions were posed to Baroness Kramer around continuity of policy, encouragingly met with the response that all the major UK parties are ‘all close to being on the same page’ regarding further light rail development.
